Subsistence Assistance -

Moose Season Opened by Emergency Order: To provide subsistence food for residents in parts of rural Alaska impacted by low fish runs, the Alaska Board of Game and the Federal Subsistence Board announced an early opening of moose season in Game Management Unit 18 below Mountain Village on the Yukon River Delta. For more information, contact Roger Seavoy at 1-800-425-2979.

Fish Provided for Nome Subsistence: On September 2nd and 3rd, 15,000 pounds of chum salmon were delivered to Nome subsistence families. The fish were caught out of Kotzebue and Unalakleet, processed by Norton Sound Seafood, and delivered to Nome by the Norton Sound Economic Development Corp. Kawerak organized the delivery around Nome, with several volunteers assisting in the transport. In Nome, 215 people requested some of the donated salmon; each received approximately seven headed and gutted frozen chums. "This is just one step in Operation Renew Hope," said Bernice Joseph, team chief for Operation Renew Hope. "We anticipate delivering more salmon to other areas in need, and of course we're continually working with the state and federal agencies to bring other types of aid to the individuals and communities affected by this disaster," she added.
