The Department
of Labor and Workforce Development shall foster and promote the welfare
of the wage earners of the state, improve their working conditions, and
advance their opportunities for profitable employment (AS 23.05.010). The
department administers employment services, unemployment insurance, and
workers' compensation programs; enforces laws and regulations dealing with
job safety, hours of work, wages, work conditions, and public employer/employee
labor relations; and collects, analyzes, and releases labor and population
statistics.
