Management of State Fisheries Consultative Process

The Central Fisheries Board is undertaking a review of current policy and strategy for the Management of State Fisheries.

As part of this, a consultation process is being undertaken on the Management of State Fisheries

State fisheries: include fisheries in the ownership of the Fisheries Boards, state lakes and fisheries held by other state bodies.

Following the consultation and review process, a national policy will be prepared on the Management of State Fisheries.

Submissions on the future management of State Fisheries are invited from interested parties and the general public,

To review current policy and strategy for the management of State Fisheries

 Definition of State Fisheries

• Fisheries in the ownership of the Fisheries Boards

• Fisheries held by other State bodies

• The State lakes

• Other Fisheries deemed to be Public Fisheries

Terms of reference

To develop a national policy for the management of the State fisheries in accordance with and to augment the ‘National Strategy plan (In Preparation) for the development of Inland Fisheries’

• To develop a national strategy for the implementation of the identified policy

• To establish a plan with appropriate performance indicators to provide for the delivery of the strategy

In undertaking this review the following will be considered:

• Overall government policy on the management of State assets

• General Ministerial policy on the management of the fisheries resource

• Current policy and practice in the management of State fisheries

• The long-term sustainable management and development of the resource

• International best practice

• Cost benefit and value for money including economic, socio-economic and   recreational value

• Options for future management

The process will be undertaken in close co-operation with the Regional Fisheries Boards.  There will be full consultation all interested parties.

The timescale for completion of the exercise is Friday 6^th September 2002.
