The Chicago Botanic Garden can be a beautiful place to take a winter stroll. Photographers will find beauty in evergreens and serene views of the Japanese Garden. Dramatic patterns of ice and water are constantly shifting in the lake as the weather changes. This is a good time to study the "bones" of the Garden: the trees, shrubs and other elements that form the foundation of a landscape with their habits and branching patterns. If you need to warm up, the Education Center’s Greenhouses provide a quick trip to the tropics, with displays of cactus and succulents and many exotic species such as orchids and bougainvillea. In the south greenhouses you will find bananas and the closely related heliconias in bloom, and crown-of-thorns provides continuous bloom in the west greenhouses.
