Christmas By the Sea Festival - Christmas is perhaps the best time of year to visit the North Carolina coast. The average air temperature is 59.4 degrees. In a celebration of this wonderful weather, the Chamber sponsors a festival - Christmas By The Sea. We invite you to consider decking the halls with local mistletoe and seashell ornaments while eating oyster stuffing and listening to the laughing gulls outside your beach cottage. The festival is a collection of events sponsored by many community organizations stretching three weekends. The first weekend is a hometown parade and a tour of homes on Oak Island. The second weekend is the Southport historic home tour, lighted boat parade (flotilla), choral concert and the downtown merchants extend their hours. The third weekend usually includes a band concert and children's activities. For complete festival information including a calendar of events visit the official Christmas By the Sea Festival Web site.

U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament - Over 24 years ago a small group of community leaders met and decided that they needed an event to showcase the great fall fishing Southport-Oak Island area has to offer. The prize money for the first tournament was guaranteed by those community leaders signing a promissory note at a local financial institution - thus the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament was born. The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament now attracts over 500 boats annually and is held in high esteem by the community and anglers. An all CASH GUARANTEED prize structure adds to the enjoyment of the event. The tournament guarantees its entire prize structure; it is not based on the number of boats that participate. The tournament pays 55 places in its primary prize category including $25,000 for the largest king mackerel. Additional cash prizes are added to the event by sponsors. The fee to enter the event is $250 early bird until September 5 and $275 after September 5. An additional $100 can be paid to enter the Tournament Within A Tournament. Low entry fees, Guaranteed Prize Money, Proud History -- why aren’t you fishing the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament? Click here for full Tournament details including rules, prizes and how to register.

U.S. Open Pier Fishing Tournament - The 1st Annual U.S. Open Pier Fishing Tournament was held in June on the Long Beach Pier and the Ocean Crest Pier in Oak Island. Anglers competed in three fish categories: Category I - spot, croaker, whiting, spade, Atlantic pompano & pin. Category II - Spanish, blue, flounder, grey trout, speckled trout, red drum & black drum. Category III - king mackerel, cobia, jack crevalle, amber jack, sheephead & tarpon. For full tournament details and results click here; or email us for a 2003 tournament brochure. Mark your calendars for the 2003 event June 6-8.
