Tropical Downpours on Mactan | Issued on: Fri Feb 7th 2003
It may be hot and sunny for a lot of the time on the Philippine island of Mactan, about 600km southeast of Manila, but when it rains, it pours. In just 6 hours up to 1200GMT Friday, 60mm of rain fell, making a total of 66mm in 24 hours, just a little short of the 74mm average for the whole of February.

Normally very cold and mostly dry at this time of year, the city of Kazalinsk in the south of the Republic of Kazakstan recently had a spell of heavy snow equivalent to about 13mm of rain. This fell in the 12 hour period ending 1200GMT Friday, and is well in excess of the February average of just 10mm.

Lying on Turkey's Black Sea coast is Samsun, home of the 2002 European Taekwondo Championships. Normally quite mild in February with an average maximum temperature of 10.6 degrees Celsius, residents and visitors would have been pleasantly surprised by a particularly warm day on Thursday when the temperature soared to 22.1 Celsius, more than 11 degrees above normal.

Lying approximately half way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth in South Africa is the town of Outdshoorn. February is one of the hottest months of the year, and average daily maximum temperatures are around 31.5 Celsius. Thursday, however, was a scorcher, the top afternoon temperature reaching 42.1 degrees Celsius, more than 10 degrees above normal.

About 120Km to the east of Outdshoorn, South Africa, lies the city of Willowmore. The particularly hot day on Thursday that gave the sizzling temperature of 42.1 Celsius in Outdshoorn triggered a thunderstorm over Willowmore, drenching the city with 25mm of rain in the 12 hour overnight period to 0600GMT Friday. For a single thunderstorm, this is not a huge amount, but Willowmore only expects 26mm on average for the whole of February.
