new transom door
|
This is taking way to long, but it has to be done right, so on we go. That is our new transom door I am holding up, it has to be solid to keep the waves out and to let those big marlins slide in.Today we finished painting the bottom and only have to paint the name on the transom and put the jaws back on the bow. Then clean up and reassemble everything and see if she will still float with all the fiberglass we have added. It will be soon now. Aloha Capt Rusty

deck with hatches

We now have a deck that has hatches where they belong. It is only a matter of putting all her internal systems back in place, like the new mufflers, and the new rudder berings etc.......... I can't wait to get back to doing the easy job of going fishing every day. Aloha Capt Rusty

A deck we have, my dad Bob Spencer.

It is a deck but it needs to be finished up with hatches and lots of fiberglass. It is taking longer than we thought but it will be worth it in the end. With any luck we will be done in a week and back to fishing, all this fiberglass work is no fun. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel getting bigger. Aloha Capt Rusty

Stripped to the bones
|
It's been a week of demolition, as the picture of the back deck shows. We are down to the bones of the boat, and getting ready to start the process of rebuilding. Tearing her apart was the easy part, putting her back together will be a longer job. Aloha Capt Rusty

Kuuloa Kai II like a fish out of water
|
Here she is looking like a fish out of the water, and where she will be for the next 3 weeks or so. We have a lot of repairs and upgrades planned for this haul out. The first thing we did was give her a good pressure washing to clean the bottom of all the accumulated growth of 2 years in the water. Then it is on with process of repairing, cleaning and painting. I will post up dates as we go along to show you our progress. Aloha Capt. Rusty

We got a casual 8:00 AM start on this day of 20 mph south west winds and went towards the area of the II buoy. It is still missing but is to be replaced soon. Then we trolled all the way to the X buoy, where we got an aku on our first pass. We went to light line and on the first pass Don caught a nice 15 pound mahi on the 40 pound test. Then he caught a few small ahi, and we ran one as live bait, but no takers. On our way in the center slammed down and Don did a good job reeling in a small 15 pound shortnosed Mediterranean Spearfish. A little further in and we took an outrigger slam from a nice mahi but it threw the hook on the way in. They were real troopers hanging in there on this rough day. Aloha Capt. Rusty

We got a 5:00 AM start on this day of 10-20 mph south west winds and went to the CO buoy. The small ahi only cooperated a little and we got 5 of them and took off uphill. We only went 1 mile and we found a school of aku and ahi in the 3 to 6 pound range and caught a bunch of them before they broke up. It was doubles and triples for awhile there. Then on the way back on the ledge we took a double 15 pound ahi and got one of them. Then the whales came by nice and close for us. Right outside the harbor at the crab boat we hooked Bill up to a 7 foot shark. He did a great job reeling it in, we took pictures and let it go. In the harbor with the help of some good old peer pressure I got everyone except Dave to join me in the eyeball consuming ritual. These were some fun guys to fish with, good going guys. Aloha Capt. We got a nice early 5:15 start to the LL buoy on this flat day, and got a small mahi 1 mile inside the buoy to start the day. At the buoy we caught some small ahi and two 6 pound aku on the light line and Erika had a 15 pound mahi grab her small lure on 40 and break it of on the run. Then we headed down and out and at 2 miles from the X buoy we had a Spearfish knock down our rigger and not hookup. Then just outside the harbor we found a pod of whales and they put on a good show for us. I was unable to get them to join in the eating of the eyeballs. It was a good day they enjoyed it. We got a 6:30 start so that we could see the waves that had been forecast to be 30 feet overnight (always better to be safe). It was only 15-17 feet and no problem getting out the channel. Off to the X buoy we went, on the way we took a double 15 pound aku and got both of them. A nice way to start the day. At the buoy we got a bunch of small tunas and even 2 in the 6 pound range (fun on the spinning reel). Then we headed back uphill, which on this day of southwest winds was towards the J buoy area. 5 miles from the X we took a strike from a stripped marlin but it didn't stay on. Shortly after that we hooked up a 15 pound mahi and landed it. Our next strike was past the II buoy area and another 15 pound mahi hooked up and came aboard. We saw at least 5 pods of whales today. They are getting more common. In the harbor I had no problem getting all these guys to consume eyeballs (I did have to eat one first) These were fun guys to fish with. Aloha Capt. Rusty

We got a 6:00 start and headed out to where we had heard that the II buoy (that broke loose 4 weeks ago) was, at 28 miles out. We took a mahi strike before the sun even came up but it came off. Then at 20 miles out we got attacked by some small stripped marlins that hit 3 different lures and never hooked up. We went out 30 miles and couldn't find the buoy so we came back in and started to get some hits. First a 5 pound aku hit the center and we got that. Then a nice 24 pound mahi took the corner pole and Larry did a good job reeling it in. We had one more strike that came off. It was another mahi. They also saw 4 different pods of humpback whales throughout the day. It was a good experience on this flat day. Aloha Capt. Rusty
