CANADA FINISHES THIRD AT FOUR NATIONS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP
- Australia wins eighth Four Nations title -

Mississauga, Ont. - Canada defeated Japan in the final round of the Four Nations Teams Championship by a final score of 5-4 to finish third overall at Christchurch Golf Club in New Zealand. Australia continued its dominance of the event, sweeping its final round singles matches against New Zealand to win its eighth title in ten championships.

Under sunny skies and moderate winds, Team Canada trailed Japan 2-1 after the morning foursomes matches, but rallied in the afternoon, taking four of the singles matches. Lee Curry of Ottawa anchored the team with a brilliant match that included birdies on six of the first 11 holes. However, the effort wasn’t enough to make up for Canada’s losses earlier in the week; just two additional match wins over the first two days would have allowed Canada to retain the championship title.

Following are the results from the morning foursome matches:

  • Ryan Vallely (Lethbridge, AB) and Mike Mezei (Lethbridge, AB) def. Haruo Fujishima and Takamasa Yamamoto 3 & 1
  • Tatsuya Sato and Toru Nakajima def. Craig Doell (Victoria, BC) and Lindsay Bernakevitch (Regina, SK)
  • 4 & 3
  • Toyokazu Fujishima and Jumpei Takayama def. Lee Curry (Ottawa, ON) and Matt Ion Young (Burlington, ON) 1-up

The following are the results from the afternoon singles matches:
Ryan Vallely (Lethbridge, AB) def. Haruo Fujishima 2 & 1
Takamasa Yamamoto def. Matt Ion Young (Burlington, ON) 4 & 3
Mike Mezei (Lethbridge, AB) def. Tatsuya Sato 5 & 4
Lindsay Bernakevitch (Regina, SK) def. Toru Nakajima 2 & 1
Toyokazu Fujishima def. Craig Doell (Victoria, BC) 5 & 4
Lee Curry (Ottawa, ON) def. Jumpei Takayama 4 & 3

The final standings are as follows:
    1. Australia 3 wins, 20.5 points
    2. New Zealand 2 wins, 15.5 points
    3. Canada 1 wins, 11 points
    4. Japan 0 wins, 7 points
