One of the great things about short track racing is all of the racing! Each night features a full program of several short no-holds-barred battles to the checkered flag that are free of pit stops and confusing strategy. The competitors, many with flamboyant personalities reminiscent of the superstars of yesteryear, boast colorful nicknames that they live up to on the track as they qualify for position through Time Trials, Heat Races, Trophy Dashes, and Last Chance Races. Then, with the preliminary events complete, the best racers take to the dirt track for the feature event to determine the night's Champion. After the races, the Pit Area is open to everyone and fans are encouraged to get a close-up look at these genuine American heroes, up-and-coming stars of tomorrow or maybe even your next door neigbor. Former series champion Steve Paine snapped a long dry spell and Kevin Bollard recorded his first series victory as the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series kicked off its season with the Eckerd 100 Saturday night at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Paine, who was shut out of victory lane last season, started fifth in the first of the twin 50-lap features and methodically worked his way to the front. The Waterloo, N.Y., resident took the lead from Bolland on lap 17 and was never seriously challenged.
