Simplified Representations (in a Windows environment). Presented 06/13/02 by Dave Shupak of Quantum Corporation What is a simplified rep? A simplified rep is a representation that displays only the components you need to see. Why create simplified reps? · Decreases regeneration time. Note: In order to decrease regeneration time, all components of your current assembly not used in the rep must be erased from RAM · Allows you to backup your assembly file copying only the parts needed for a specific simplified rep. Note: In order to back up just the parts used in the simplified rep, you must erase all other components from RAM · Decreases retrieval time. · Increases performance of graphics card. · Allows you to work with a limited amount of RAM · Allows you to easily toggle between representations showing only components and details you wish to see. · Allows you to create simplified reps within your assemblies of other designers’ assemblies without actually modifying their assemblies. What advantages do simplified reps have over layers? · Reduce regeneration time. · Allow substitution of one rep for another. · Are drawing view specific. · Filter items out of a parametric BOM table. Uses of layers – Layers are beneficial for toggling the display mode of notes, cosmetic features, datum curves, planes, axes, points and coordinate systems. Types of simplified reps · Master reps - (include) always reflect the fully detailed assembly, including all of its members. · Exclude reps - exclude components as the default · Graphics reps - are for viewing purposes only offering no functionality. Also, they are session specific and time consuming to create. · Geometry reps - provide complete geometry for components but only offer a marginal increase in performance over master reps. Geometry rep intersections update to changes made to the assembly (but not changes made to the part), such as dimension modification, feature redefinition, change in component placement, etc. Geometry reps are also session specific and time consuming to create. · Drawing view simplified reps – are used to show just the views or sheets you wish to see. This is separate from using assembly / part simplified reps in drawings. Drawing view simplified reps still retrieve all drawing models used in a drawing therefore offering only a marginal increase in performance. The increase in performance is realized since only the views shown in the current simplified rep are refreshed. How to create a simplified rep
Simplified Rep Create
Include in part mode or Master in assembly mode (If you want your rep to include components and features as the default) - use when you want most parts or features displayed or when you want new components and features to automatically be added to the rep. Select features or parts you do not want displayed. Done Exclude (If you want your rep to exclude components and features as the default) – use when you only want a few features or parts displayed. Select features or parts you want displayed. Done Assembling a simplified rep into an assembly. 1. You must first create a simplified rep in your top – level assembly. Note: In this example, I’m creating a simplified rep named install. I’m picking exclude as my default. Instead of selecting any components, I select done. Now, I assemble my engineering empty rep (exclude all rep) in and redefine my simplified rep to show the desired components. 2. From your top level assembly rep, Pick Simplified Rep Set Current Pick the simplified rep you wish to install a simplified part or subassembly into. 3. Assemble your part or subassembly. You will be prompted for the simplified rep. Redefining a simplified rep 1. From your top level menu, Pick Simplified Rep Redefine Pick the simplified rep you wish to redefine. Pick Exclude, Default, or Substitute Done Done / Return Copying a simplified rep and redefining it Note: If you wish to expand upon a simplified rep and keep the original, you can copy a simplified rep and redefine it. On-Demand Simplified Rep Settings (located under Simplified Rep, Preferences) – allows you to tailor excluded and graphics simplified reps to automatically retrieve components as needed when redefining features and components. Note: In this example, I’m redefining the fixture which is defined to the drive with one of the four support posts. The foot post is not shown in the simplified rep, but is automatically retrieved when I redefine the drive. Definition Rules – Components may also be selected and simplified reps automatically updated through defining rules with the definition rules dialog box. The following rules layout may be used to build conditions under the definition rules dialog box. · Geometric o Zone o Size o Distance o Exterior Components · Parent / Child o Parent o Child · Properties o Model Name o Comp Type o Expression o Reuse Rules Using assembly / part simplified reps in drawings 1. Set drawing model to the simplified rep of your choice. Views Dwg Models Set / Add Rep Select Simplified Rep 2. To replace a simplified rep in a drawing. Select Views Modify View View State Select View Select Simplified Rep Rules and restrictions for using simplified reps · From within a simplified rep, you cannot do the following: o Use the Restructure, Family Table, and Integrate commands in the ASSEMBLY menu o Use the Cutout command in the ADV COMP UTL menu o Delete or suppress substituted components o Redefine components that are excluded or substituted · When a drawing containing only simplified reps is checked out of Intralink, all components required for the master rep will be checked out. · Simplified reps may not be created in an instance. · Simplified representations saved prior to Release 18.0 may not access all current simplified rep and assembly functionality.
