Attention, bird watchers!

Year-round, you’ll find that the Chicago Botanic Garden has some of the best bird-watching in the region. Varied habitats from wide-open prairie to native oak woodland, as well as 81 acres of waterways, attract birds of many kinds, from owls to egrets, herons to horned grebes. More that 242 bird species have been sighted at the Garden.

Spring and fall are peak seasons for migratory birds such as warblers, orioles, tanagers, vireos and flycatchers, according to Naturalist Jim Steffen, who supervises native habitat areas and has, with the aid of several local bird experts, compiled a list of Birds of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Resident summer-breeding birds include not only goldfinches, mourning doves, cardinals and song sparrows, but also red-bellied woodpeckers, chickadees and Eastern wood peewees. You might even glimpse a yellow rail, snowy egret or Townsend’s warbler–all rare species that have been spotted at the Garden. Bird enthusiasts can also take advantage of bird walks offered through the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden.
