The Secretary of State is the President's chief adviser on matters that deal with foreign countries, and has more than 5,000 employees stationed in the U.S. and in every country around the world to help carry out the President's plans.
Once called the Department of Foreign Affairs, the State Department is the principal department of the U.S. Government. Since 1789 the duties of the job have not changed, but they have become more difficult as countries around the world grow and develop and are involved in many kinds of issues. |
