Troubleshooting Guide
No Video:
If you are having problems seeing video, or only receiving audio, try the following steps:
- Make sure that your configuration meets the browser, ActiveX/Java and media player requirements.
- Close all other applications.
- Close all windows of your browser and open the application again.
- Enter www.sap.com/community and load the events page.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- A window may open with this message: "Do you want to install and run the DirectShow Windows Media Video 8 Decoder". If this happens, click "Yes," and install and run the download.
- Select your connection speed, making sure not to choose a speed faster than your actual connection.
- If you still experience video problems, install the latest version of the Windows Media Player.
- Restart your computer and re-establish your Internet connection.
No Audio:
If you are receiving video without audio, or if you are experiencing degraded audio:
- Quit all applications, including your browser.
- Make sure that your speakers are far enough from your monitor to avoid RF interference
- Don't use a CD, MP3, DVD, or similar player when trying to listen to streaming audio.
- Open your Internet browser to www.sap.com and select the event page.
- Give the video a few seconds to complete its buffering process.
- Use the volume selector below the video window to raise and lower the sound.
- Look at the speaker icon in the lower right-hand corner of the task bar, beneath the video window. An 'X' through the speaker indicates that the sound has been muted. To turn off the mute selection, click on the speaker, and the 'X' will disappear.
If you still are not able to load the page or you receive an error:
- Close all applications and restart your computer.
- Establish your Internet connection and log onto www.sap.com.
- Check all of your settings and plug-ins to be sure that no errors are the result of missing software or hardware conflicts.

Screen Resolution
Recommended: 1024 by 768 or higher. To change or check the settings for your screen resolution, please follow these steps:
- From your task bar at the bottom left corner of your Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows NT computer, click once on "Start."
- Select "Settings."
- Select "Control Panel". A window should open up with the control panels for your operating system.
- Select "Display" then "Settings" from the tab menu.
- Using your mouse, click down, hold, and slide the horizontal bar toward the right, where it reads, 'More.'
- Slide the bar until it reads 1024 by 768 or greater.
- It is recommended that you use a fairly high resolution setting that will allow you to use the most screen space possible, anything from 1024 by 768 to 1280 by 1084. Anything higher than this will probably make some things too small to read on your screen, although the degree of detail will be higher.
Color Depth
Recommended: 16-Bit (65536 colors) or more If you would like to change your color depth settings, follow these basic steps:
- From the 'Display' control panel, click the 'Settings' tab and select the colors pull-down menu.
- You will have a series of choices based on your video card and the color depth it can support.
- Select "True Color" -- sometimes known as "Millions of Colors" or "24/32-Bit" color. You will now be able to display the wider range of colors that are used in the webcast.
- You may select 'High Color,' '16-Bit' video, or 'Thousands of Colors' if these are the only options available. These settings will be fine in most circumstances, but they are not recommended for optimal viewing.
Media Player:
SAP Community requires Windows Media Player in order to receive the video stream.
Internet Explorer: Required is at least Windows Media Player 6.2. We recommend:
Netscape: You must have installed the Windows Media Player plugin.
Adobe Acrobat Reader:
In order to view the Webcast presentations, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 4 or higher. Get the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Internet Connection and Bandwidth
You need at least a 56k-modem and a proper Internet connection to view SAP online events. If the quality of your Internet connection decreases below 56k, you will receive no video. You will hear only audio.
At the Webcast page, we offer two video qualities:
Access Through a Firewall
If you are accessing the SAP Online Events through a firewall, then you need to define a "proxy server" in your media player. The name of the proxy server and the port it uses will be specific to your company/organization. Please contact your local IT support for this information. Once you have the name of the proxy server, please follow the instructions below.
For Windows Media Player 7 and higher:
- Click on "Tools".
- Select "Options" from the drop-down menu.
- Click the "Network" tab.
- Locate the "Proxy Settings" area.
- Double-click on "HTTP".
- If you already know that your Web browser is configured to use a Web proxy:
- Select "Use browser proxy settings".
If you don't know that your Web browser is configured to use a Web proxy, select the option labeled "Use browser proxy settings".
- Select "Use the following proxy server".
- Insert the proxy address and insert the correct port number -- either 80 or 8080.
- Click "OK".
- Double-click on "MMS".
- Click "OK".
- Important: Now follow also the instructions for Windows Media Player 6.4!!!
The reason: Windows Media Player 7 setup installs two players: Windows Media Player 6 AND Windows Media Player 7. And when a webpage has an embedded media player (like the SAP Webcast page) Windows Media Player 6 is always used.
For Windows Media Player 6.4:
(Run "mplayer2.exe" located in the folder "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player")
- Click on "View".
- Select "Options...".
- Click on the "Advanced" tab.
- Make sure "Streaming Media (Windows Media)" is highlighted.
- Click "Streaming Media (Windows Media)" to highlight.
- Click the "Change..." button.
- Verify that the "HTTP" option at the bottom of the page is checked.
- If you already know that your Web browser is configured to use a Web proxy:
- Select "Use browser proxy settings".
If you don't know that your Web browser is configured to use a Web proxy:
- Select "Use Proxy".
- Click the "Configure Proxy Settings" button.
- Insert the proxy address and insert the correct port number -- either 80 or 8080.
- Click "OK".
- Click "OK" to return to the "Advanced Options" dialog box.
- Click "OK" to return to the Windows Media Player.
