ATSDR
issues public health assessment for public review and comment
on the U.S. Naval
Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach and Norfolk,
Va. The public comment period runs from June 10 to
July 11.
The current
issue of ATSDRs
newsletter Public Health and the Environment focuses
on emergency preparedness.
The
final public health
assessment for Hill Air Force base near Ogden, Utah, finds
that there is no health hazard to workers and residents at
the base or to nearby residents.
Recognizing
the important contributions that nurses make to improving
public health, the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry,
and the National Institute for Nursing Research collaboratively
organized a roundtable on nursing and environmental health
in August 2002. Full
text of the report, "Extramural Update in Environmental
Health Perspectives," is now available.
ATSDR
releases ToxProfiles
2003
CD-ROM, featuring updated information on the health effects
of exposure to hazardous substances and other toxicological
information. The CD-ROM contains 161 toxicological profiles
covering more than 250 substances.
In its
final public health
assessment
of the Libby Asbestos National Priorities List site
in Libby, Mont., ATSDR concludes residents were exposed to
hazardous levels of asbestos.
ATSDR
has extended the public comment period for its public health
assessment of the North
Railroad Avenue plume site in Espanola, N.M., through June
20, 2003.
ATSDR
and the EPA have published an informational
brochure about the potential hazards of asbestos-contaminated
vermiculite insulation. The brochure provides information
on how to identify these products and steps individuals can
take to reduce exposure.
ATSDR
will hold a community meeting followed by a public availability
session June 25 for the Molycorp
Inc.
site near Questa, N.M. Also, individuals can schedule
an appointment to meet one-on-one with an ATSDR staff member
on June 26 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Call Health

ATSDR
and the Oregon Department of Human Services are releasing
for public review and comment a public
health assessment for the former Taylor
Lumber and Treating facility site in Sheridan, Ore.
Both agencies conclude the site poses no apparent public
health hazard. The public comment period extends through
July 17, 2003.
