FISHERIES & ANGLING HIGHLIGHTS

It was a much improved week weather-wise which saw warmer, drier and more pleasant summer conditions prevail on a number of days.  Water levels are now just starting to drop back as we write and this augurs well for the coming week and indeed the weeks ahead as weather is forecast to settle down significantly. While angling numbers and feedback is down at some centres around the region, reports while still generally patchy are improving in areas and we received some good individual reports. TIGHT LINES !!

This weeks Fishing Report

Our fishing reports attract much readership and direct contribution over the season from domestic and visiting anglers who fish our extensive waters. The column is designed to  provide updates on fisheries/angling/events/competitions and to enable you the angler to interact and communicate directly with contributors to share fishing tips and advice on local venues or even book your angling service.

UPPER SHANNON

ShRFB reports for the Upper Shannon

Angling numbers are down in the Lanesboro area with little feedback received.

Angling was generally very slow and anglers struggled at many venues in the Upper Shannon region. With improved weather we expect water levels to start gradually dropping and hopefully this will convert into better fishing for anglers in response.

KOP THAT

Last July we featured an article on some English Pikers from Liverpool, who had a splendid few days fishing in the Midlands. Well the lads who work in Liverpool's top heart hospital the Cardio-Thoracic Centre were back again, and this time they brought top surgeon Abas Rashid who  carried out  the heart operation some years back on Liverpool FC. boss Gerard Houllier. Abas was suffering a little himself  due to the high pollen count over the weekend, but by Monday he was fighting fit and had a good day on Derravaragh. While I  was un- hooking some of the pike, Abas gave me some advice on  forceps  manoeuvres. The group consisted of 4 anglers, Abas Rashid , Glenn Russell, Michael Green and Lee Robertson, the two best pike were caught by Michael Green on Sunday, one weighed 15lb 14oz and on Monday he topped the weekend with a cracking 21lb pike. While  Michael was playing the monster his reel  locked and he had to hand play the monster to the boat. As the photo shows he  successfully landed weighed and then released. Once again the group stayed in Bloomfield House Hotel, and will be back again next year or sooner.

TENCH ON THE MOVE

I met with the Shannon Fisheries last Tuesday 10th June, on the Royal Canal at the New Bridge on the Ballymahon Road, who arrived with approx 150 Tench from Lough Owel. These fish were tagged by Paul Mc Loone of the Central Fisheries Board, who is on contract work with Waterways Ireland, the people who keep the canal in such good  shape. A lot of the Tench were small, but there was some nice fish of  3lbs-4lbs in weight. Pascal Weymes of Mullingar who is one of the best coarse anglers in the Midlands was on hand to see the Tench being tagged and released into the Royal Canal. Pascal fishes the canal  a lot and again its great to see these type of fish going into the canal system.

ShRFB reports for Mark Egan Athlone  Bait Stockist,  Accommodation Provider Email:  info@shannonsidehouse.com Website www.shannonsidehouse.com  Tel: 0902 94773 Mob 087 8517299 - the River Shannon and Inny ATHLONE area.

We received little angling feedback for the area this week.  Access has become a problem in the low-lying callow lands such as the Meadows and the backwaters including Calf Island, Long Island due to the very high water.  With more settled weather again this week, water levels are expected to start  dropping back. Anglers based in Athlone fished Drum Lake on the Upper Shannon and had a few tench, other than this very little to report from the area!.

The ShRFB reports for Ray Duithie Old Forge Banagher,  Bait Stockist and Accommodation provider  Tel: 0509 51504.  Email: kmduthie2@eircom.net  BANAGHER area this week.

The water levels are high but starting to drop in the Banagher area. Fishing wise, it's a case of  lack of anglers this week which has resulted in very limited feedback received for the area. A lot more anglers are expected this coming week with increased feedback expected. Two anglers from England Mr Heaton and friend had 30 tench over two days, best fish 5.75lbs on the Boora Lakes, this is the only fishing report we received.

ShRFB reports for John Dyson, Ballyshrule Lodge , PORTUMNA Tel: 0509 41528

Fishing was patchy generally due again to difficult angling conditions, very high water. However  individual anglers did well, mainly on the river venues around Portumna. A few guests of John Dyson had bags averaging from 45lb to 90lbs on the river, mainly hybrids, a few individuals did encounter bream at Meelick, also a lot of pike on the match stretches at Meelick. Steve Handcock from Oxfordshire had roach hybrids and bream on the river venues around Portumna. Paul Chutes from Liverpool had mixed bags from the river and had a good day on bream on the lake swims, northern shores of Derg, bag of 80lbs. Prospects look much better and at time of writing and anglers are doing a little better.

ShRFB reports for Dermot Killeen Shannonbridge Tel 0905 74112 Email:   jimmyjkilleen@yahoo.com reports for SHANNONBRIDGE.area

Despite high water levels, we received a number of quite good reports from different parties fishing at different venues in  the area. Hopefully this marks a turning point to better fishing over the coming weeks. Mary  Reeves from Bath in England fished at Finnamore's Lake on Wednesday last and had a very enjoyable day with tench to over 2lbs and carp to 3.5lbs. The next day she fished the canal at Ferbane and had bream and roach on red maggots. Pete Newton from Reddich fished the mouth of the River Brosna on Sunday June 15th in good weather and commented in the angling logs that he enjoyed every minute, returning a total of 34lbs of roach and hybrids and two trout to 2lbs. 10 years old Ben Myatt from Bromsgrove England landed a specimen tench of 2.79kg on the hot water stretch at Shannonbridge. More recently on Friday 13th June an angler from Blackpool had another specimen tench on the hot water and hooked and lost others. An English  party staying in Shannonbridge had some success on the Shannon at Portumna, best 49lbs of hybrids fishing with feeder and maggot.

ShRFB reports for Jim Robinson, Fishing Guide Lower Shannon  Tel Mob: 087 2339999  Landline: +353 61 453808  Web Address:   http://www.iol.ie/~jimrob Email: jimrob@iol.ie

Angling guests of Jim Robinson are getting good pike fishing on Atedaun Lake, Co Clare,  water levels are recovering well.

ShRFB reports for TJ O'Brien, TJ's ANGLING CENTRE  KILLALOE reports for the area

Bream fishing has picked up well on the lake swims on Lough Derg at Killaloe, following a slack few weeks due to the adverse weather. Angling prospects look better  for the coming weeks as shoals of bream re-group after spawning. Angling guests of TJ O'Brien  Lez Shirley and Michael Greene had a very good week which saw them break their own personal best catches on a number of days with 100lb+ bags, best bag was over 270lbs between them. They also recorded their best individual fish at over 7.5lbs. Hopefully more positive reports will continue for next week

Ivan O'Connell Dooradoyle Limerick Mob:  087 - 2428033 Email Address:  ivan@ryaninsurances.ie reports on a recent trip to Plassey on the lower River Shannon.
" This venue is still fishing very well for mixed catches of bream, roach, hybrids and dace. Again no-one is really coarse fishing this stretch. The parking is no longer a problem and cars are safe within the University of Limerick campus. I fished this stretch near the navigation posts on Friday the 13th of June and had 10 bream to 6lbs and a lot of good hybrids to 3lbs plus some roach for a total catch of around 80lbs. All fish were caught on feeder or bomb."
