He was an American legend...admired and despised...William Randolph Hearst.
Hearst was from San Francisco, a native son. And when he left it behind to achieve an empire he created the world's first and most powerful media conglomerate in the 20th century.
Hearst was publishing tycoon... Hollywood movie mogul... Politician... Demagogue.
Hearst would leave his wife and children for a teenage chorus girl, Marion Davies. And spend the rest of his life with her.
And when he created his fabled San Simon, America had a fairy tale kingdom complete with movie stars.
Hearst was also feared and hated. His enemies were prodigious and included American presidents.
Though his fascination with tyrants like Adolph Hitler was infamous, what Hearst may best be remembered for is the very public fight over the movie 'Citizen Kane'... one of the greatest films ever made.
The unforgiving film by Orson Welles brought Hearst immortality.
William Randolph Hearst lived and died as if he had been an American emperor.
