New Outdoor Gear for 2001:
SLEEPING BAGS

Coleman. Coleman showed us several affordable sleeping
bags including mummy, hybrid, and rectangular shapes; regular
and long sizes; right or left zippers; temperature ratings from
32 degrees to minus 10 degrees; and prices ranging from $55 to
$100. New for 2001 are the three innovative OmniTemp bags, which
can be converted from rectangular to mummy bags and vice versa,
and the Ridgeline minus 10 mummy bag. Many of their bags were
formerly sold under the Peak 1 brand name.
Sierra Designs. Sierra Designs is revolutionizing
the way people sleep in the outdoors. In the past few seasons
they have introduced the wildly popular Flex and Stretch bags
that allow for sleeping in different positions and provide more
room for unrestricted movement. At the show, Mike Mooers showed
us the new Sierra Designs ThermoSpectrum DryDown expedition bags.
With this bag you can purchase one bag that will adjust to the
changing temperatures encountered when going from base camp to
summit. They have a removable insulated top layer that is also
highly water resistant and breathable. Unlike any other expedition
bag, this new design adds insulation to the outside of the bag
allowing the added layer to retain its loft. It also provides
the ability to add insulation with down sweaters and other available
layers. You can completely remove the zip off top for warmer temperatures
and it also allows for better ventilation and escape route for
moisture. The bags are available in men's and women's designs
in three temperature ratings ranging from -40 to +20.
