Family Planning Clinics are provided to high-risk,
low-income women and teens at public health centers in Bethel, Craig,
Fairbanks and surrounding communities, Juneau, Kenai Peninsula, Ketchikan
and Prince of Wales, Kodiak, and Palmer/Wasilla. In addition, family
planning funds are provided on a fee for service basis for private
non-profits that are enrolled providers for family planning and adolescent
health services in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer, and Soldotna. Non
scalpel vasectomies are also provided in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer
and Soldotna.

Nurse practitioners provide comprehensive family planning
services on a sliding fee scale. These services include: history and
physical exam counseling regarding methods of contraception the contraceptive
method chosen by the client follow up referrals for further medical
care if needed referrals to the breast & cervical cancer early
detection program.

Family planning services are targeted to high-risk,
low-income women who do not have the financial resources to obtain
family planning services in the private sector. Family planning clinics
serve an average of 5,000 clients annually.

All family planning services are funded by federal
Title X and MCH Block Grant monies and state funds.

The need to provide comprehensive women's health services
has been identified nationally and in Alaska. Women's health services
include comprehensive health care through the life span (i.e. adolescent
health, reproductive health, menopause, and post menopause).

The development of Standards of Care for nurse practitioners
working in family planning clinics and quality assurance reviews ensure
the delivery of quality family planning services. Current funding
levels do not meet the need for delivery of family planning services
statewide.
