AMERICANS FOR Tax Reformhttp://www.atr.orgProperty Tax Initiative Good for AlaskaWashington DC - Alaskans for Property Tax Reform has successfully placed their initiative on the November 2000 ballot. This initiative is modeled after Proposition 13 in California that has remained intact for California's property owners. This initiative, if passed, would cap assessment increases at 2% per year and property taxes would be capped at 1% of assessed value. "Property owners in Alaska deserve a tax break. Taxes are already too high, especially property taxes. Why should taxpayers be penalized even more because they want to live up to the American dream of owning a home," stated Grover G. Norquist, president, Americans For Tax Reform. "The average American already pays too much in taxes. Taxes take more out of a family's budget than the cost of food, clothing and shelter combined. Cutting property taxes and giving Alaska's families relief from some sort of taxation is a benefit that the voters of Alaska could give themselves," remarked Damon B. Ansell, vice president of policy. "This initiative is on the ballot for the voters of Alaska to decide. Alaskans now have the opportunity to make a serious choice for themselves and their families. They have the ability to reduce their own property taxes and relieve some of the burden big government has placed on them," said Kate Meerstein, state projects manager. Americans for Tax Reform is a non-partisan coalition of over 80,000 taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all federal and state tax increases. Contact:Kate Meerstein |
