The Bellerive Foundation is a non-profit organization which deals
with a wide range of ecological, socio-political and ethical issues.
Its efforts range from environmental protection and conservation
of natural resources to the safeguarding of human and animal rights.
It was established in 1977 by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan*, who is
President of the Foundation.
The Foundation's work is divided into the following main programs:
"Appropriate Technology (Energy for Survival):" This
program was established to promote more efficient use of the three
principle sources of energy on which the world's poor depend for
survival, namely human muscle power, draught animal power and
increasingly scarce fuelwood.
"Alp Action:" Alp Action functions under the auspices
of the Bellerive Foundation as an independent, non-political agency
for environmental action and awareness. It aims to contribute
concretely to the preservation of the Alps' natural and cultural
diversity and vitality.
"Bellerive Conferences:" Bellerive convenes international
conferences on themes "having direct implications on the
long-term stability of the planet." The conferences bring
together high-level, multi-disciplinary panels of experts representing
all sides of a given controversy. A recent initiative of this
kind was the Bellerive/GLOBE International Conference on the theme
"Policing the Global Economy: Why? How? And For Whom?"
held in March 1998.
"Respect for Life:" Aims to promote a balanced and holistic
approach to conserving endangered species and habitats as well
as both human and animal rights.
Budget: In recent years the budget has averaged around two
million Swiss francs per annum, with income coming from private
sources plus contributions from individual and corporate Friends
of the Bellerive Foundation.
