Lakeview East
Diversey Pkwy (2800N) to Irving Park Road (4000N) - Lake Michigan to Chicago River. Lakeview is one of Chicago's larger neighborhoods, now comprised of smaller neighborhoods within its boundaries. These include Wrigleyville, home of the Chicago Cubs, Roscoe Village and Lakeview East. Lakeview East is bordered by Halsted to the West and Lakeshore Drive to the East.
The Hotel Lake View was built on the lake shore in 1853 around what is now Grace Street. It is thought to be responsible for giving Lake View its name. In 1887 the town of Lake View was incorporated into the city.
Hawthorne Place – a Chicago Historic District - is unique for being one of the few streets along the north shore that was developed with larger lots. This had been planned early in the development of Lakeview as a way to attract buyers who wanted to be close to the loop but also wanted larger yards than usually found in the city.
East Lakeview includes the neighborhood known as Boys Town, located on Halsted Street between Belmont and Waveland. This rainbow stickers in windows show that the alternative lifestyle is strongly embraced by the area’s residents and businesses. Chicago's city government recently paid for the installation of rainbow-colored pylons along Halsted. The annual Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade is held here usually in June.
The picturesque Belmont Harbor sits on one and one half miles of lake, beaches and park on the eastern border offering plenty of opportunities for swimming and boating. In the summer, spring, and fall, the lakefront paths are a popular spot for running, rollerblading, and biking. The beach called Belmont Rocks used to be Chicago's main gay beach.
Much of the area around Belmont is becoming built up with luxurious townhouse condominiums and lakefront highrises. There is still a variety of single family, condos and multi-unit housing. Most 1-bedroom units are in older high rises.
