The Bristol Bay red king crab season lasted just over 2 days this year, the shortest season ever. Crabbers brought more crab in per pot than they have in recent history making for a quick capture of this year's quota. Additionaly, good weather conditions helped crews work faster and safer.

Red king crab are typically caught in large steel pots that are baited with chopped herring.  The pots measure 7'x 7'x 3' and weigh over 700 pounds- empty.  The pots are set and retrieved using hydraulic launchers and large winches. 

Crab fishing in Alaska ranks as the nation's #1 most hazardous job. Brave crab fishermen work in harsh weather conditions and hazardous environments.
