JOEL E. REEVES APPOINTED MANAGER OF GPO’S GRAPHIC SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

Public Printer Michael F. DiMario has named Joel E. Reeves, a twenty-five year veteran of the Government Printing Office, as Manager of GPO’s Graphic Systems Development Division (GSDD). The appointment was effective February 25.

A key unit of GPO’s Production Department, the GSDD provides software and equipment services in support of GPO, congressional, and customer agency information product needs. The Division develops applications software in support of GPO’s Production Department; manages systems supporting GPO internal and customer client/server networks, including GPO Access; premasters CD-ROM publications; supports congressional and agency utilization of GPO’s MicroComp publishing system; designs Web sites and databases for congressional and agency Internet applications; and provides Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and other markup language production support to GPO and congressional and agency customers. GSDD is directly responsible for developing the online databases that are made available to the public via GPO Access. As GSDD Manager, Reeves will serve as GPO’s Webmaster.

A native of Kalamazoo, MI, Reeves graduated in 1976 from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science cum laude in Printing Management. He began his GPO career that year as a Printing Assistant in the Quality Control and Technical Department. He was promoted to Printing Specialist in Quality Control in 1978, where he served as one of the primary architects of GPO’s Quality Assurance Through Attributes Program. In 1984 he moved to GPO’s Planning office as an Information Management Specialist, where he was part of a team that developed GPO’s mainframe-based computer estimating and job jacket writing system.

In 1990 he was promoted to Supervisory Printing Systems Analyst in GPO’s Production Department, where he served as Chief of the PostScript Service Section, which provides high resolution output to customers from their PC-based desktop publishing files. He also served as one of the leaders on GPO projects to create the GPO Access Web site and the Commerce Business Daily’s CBDNet Web site, and to introduce direct-to-plate technology within GPO.

Reeves resides in Springfield, VA, with his wife Peggy, a Navy Department cost analyst, and daughter Shannon, a junior at Robert E. Lee High School. He enjoys whitewater canoeing, a pastime he shares with Shannon, who is a member of the U.S. Junior Wildwater Kayak Team.
