Rainbow Runner (Elagatis bipinnulata)

Hawaiian salmon.
Yellowtail runner.

Identification:
Upper body sea blue with two light blue lateral lines.
Belly silvery white with one bronze-yellow lateral line.
Bright yellow and forked tail.

Temperature range:
21 - 30 Celsius (70 - 86 Fahrenheit).

Typical location:
In open ocean around logs, flotsam, weed lines and in warm current.
Around buoy’s and FAD’s (Fish Aggregating Devices).
Around deep water reefs, wrecks and drop off continental shelf.

Fishing methods:
Trolling live or dead mullet, mackerel or squid.
Trolling smaller lures, minnows and poppers.
Drifting with small live bait, often with chum.
Deep water jigging.

Fighting characteristics:
Fast but short runs near the surface.
