The third exhibition at the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum opening May 15, 2003 presents a selection of twenty-nine works of art that trace the origins of the Pop Art movement from practical beginnings as commercial and consumer imagery to the full-scale celebrity of the genre, as achieved by Andy Warhol’s Factory.

American Pop Icons identifies key moments in the development of Pop Art, from early works by Robert Rauschenberg that bridged the gap between Abstract Expressionism and the images of mass media to more contemporary examples of Pop Art by living artists such as James Rosenquist. Drawn from the holdings of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Sonnabend Collection, and private lenders from Europe and the United States, the exhibition focuses on the theme of the common object and its sources in advertisements, consumer product packaging, and comic strips. The term Pop, which spread to music and fashion, corresponded to an entire way of life among young people in the 1960s, becoming a significant sociological phenomenon that completely altered perceptions for the remaining years of the century.

Highlights of American Pop Icons include Robert Rauschenberg’s monumental 32-foot long silk-screened painting, Barge (1962) painted in a 24-hour period, Roy Lichtenstein’s mural-sized Preparedness (1963), and Tom Wesselmann’s Still Life #33 (1963). These images, presented with (and sometimes transformed by) humor, wit, and irony, can be seen as both a celebration and a critique of popular culture.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color, fully illustrated catalogue in English, including descriptive texts for thirty-two paintings. It will be available in late May for $25 softcover and $40 hardcover.
