Rare books acquired for Library
|
Seizing a unique opportunity, the Garden has acquired more than 4,000 rare botanical books and journals from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Prized works include first editions of Darwins botanical works and a collection of gardening journals published in the 18th century.
Spanning six centuries, the collection gives the Garden one of the countrys top botanical libraries and creates the foundation for research and education on a par with the worlds greatest museums. Containing historical, and sometimes scarce, volumes dating back to the 15th century, the priceless collection includes 2,219 rare books and 2,000 journal titles.
Nearly one-third of the newly acquired rare books were published between 1400 and 1799; 60 percent date to the 19th century. Many of the collections books and journals are not available for study anywhere else in the Midwest.
"This collection fits into the collections of libraries in this areathe Newberry, Morton Arboretum and Field Museum of Natural Historyas if it were a missing puzzle piece," said Vice President of Education Larry DeBuhr. "With this collection, the libraries in the Chicago area, including those at the great universities of Chicago, Northwestern and Illinois, can proudly claim to have one of the strongest natural history book collections in existence."
