Sacramento River Fishing Report
The upper river through Redding remains good for both fly and spin fisherman.
25 to 35 fish days for trout are still the norm, with the average fish of 11
to 16 inches. For spin fishing, try glow bugs or crickets, and for fly fishing
try nymphs. In the evening, try a cattis, or an occasional stone fly. The
salmon are moving into the upper river in larger numbers and size now, and
will increase even more through September, with October being the prime time.
Backtroll Kwik-Fish, K-15's and 16's, and backbounce roe.
Shasta Lake Fishing Report
The bass in the lake are fair. The main bite is 0-30 feet deep. Try using
rubber worms, hula grubs, crank baits, and spinner baits. The trout are down
about 40-70 feet, and the salmon are about 50-90 feet. Try humdingers in
silver and blue, coconuts and wedding rings, all behind double slingblades.
Sacramento River Fishing Forecast for August and September 2003
The August 1st salmon opener on the upper Sacramento River started out with a
bang, with fish being caught up to 28 lbs. The salmon are on their march up the
river, and are building force now. The sturgeon and trout will watch and wait for
their chance to make a move on the reds, when the Kings aren't looking. It will
hit a crescendro along about mid-October. With their conquest complete, thousands
of Kings will battle for their beautiful maidens, with the trout and steelhead in
tow.
Shasta Lake Fishing Forecast for August and September 2003
In the upcoming weeks the call for salmon and trout will be trolling, at
40 to 90 feet. The blue gill, crappie, and catfish will be getting more
active. The bass will be between 0 and 30 feet deep. Try mudlines, in
multi-cover areas on points. Also, try crank baits, spinner baits, worms
and grubs and top-waters, early and late.
