Story of Bali, Indonesia
spent too much time on a headshrinker's couch. The beak, the beady, brooding eyes, the prunish wrinkles, all combine to present this illusion.

In Bali, where legend has it that a giant (and obviously benevolent) turtle is holding the whole island on his back, -2ind where the turtle is honoured in intricate stone carvings in many temples, it is surprising to find its meat served as a delicacy at feasts.

There was a day when a very good Balinese friend of mine sent a messenger to bring me to him. "At the end of the week", he explained when 1 arrived, "I will make a feast to celebrate my

Daughter's birthday Come and see what you're going to eat The Turtle, with its head on a patch of wet earth, lay in the shade of a pavilion in the kitchen courtyard.

It was indeed a magnificent turtle. A turtle to be proud of. A turtle that looked remarkably like my Uncle Bob when his corns were hurting. Hurriedly I turned away wondering how I could attend the feast and avoid eating a slice of Uncle Bob....

As usual, my houseboy came to the rescue.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
