 The nerve center of Barcelona is considered the Placa de Catalunya, which is situated in the Barri Gotic quarter, the oldest area in the southeastern part of the city. It is here that most of the buses, including the open-top tourist bus meet. The large, open square is lined with seating and the ornamental gardens contain statues. At one end are wonderful water features. The square is a popular meeting place, especially at the weekend. It is surrounded by some of the large department stores including Corte Ingles and Marks and Spencers, some of which occupy splendid buildings.
