What's New

New Outdoor Gear for 2001:

CLOTHING

Today, great clothes to wear in the outdoors are abundant. Technology in fibers have changed dramatically and most outdoor companies are so fashion conscious, that outdoor clothes brands are worn by individuals who don't even venture off the sidewalk. In fact, the active, outdoor look is a key style for the new Millennium (even if you're a couch potato).

Nike/ACG. Nike announced that they are extending their "All Conditions" Line to the beach. Nike said it will give its customers fresh "All Conditions" wear starting next spring in the form of a new performance-based apparel line built for the "amphibious" warm weather outdoor ACG customer. Nike said ACG is committed to providing the outdoor athlete with gear that is fresh, relevant, and high performance even if their playground is not the mountain or desert… but the water. Watch for this cool stuff this spring.

Columbia Sportswear. Columbia's sportswear offers a diverse collection of apparel designed for a variety of outdoor activities. They have fabrics that won't wrinkle when you wad them up in your pack, and fabrics that wick away moisture from your skin to keep you warm in cold temperatures and cool in hot temps. They have apparel and outerwear for any outdoor activity, including: camping, hiking, adventure, travel, hunting or fishing. They offer so many new looks and fabric that you just have to go to the store to see and feel.

I thought the Columbia Outfitter Vest and the bib overalls with convertible pant to shorts were especially cool for young women. Columbia was among the first to recognize that females love to fish as much as the guys and developed a special line of fishing clothes just for gals. One of the many new styles available for guys are the UJUSTYME Short with a toggle drawstring at the leg. Another new item from Columbia this year is their SPF 30 shirt with vented holes that protects from the sun. Columbia said a wet T-shirt transmits 95% of the sun and with a growing amount of skin cancer, you might want to be a little more protected.

Horny Toad. Horny Toad's slogan is "Every day is an adventure." Horny Toad representative Lisa Raleigh said, "We love adventures both big and small. In fact, some of the most adventurous spirits we know are the folks able to find passion and enthusiasm and wonder in everyday movements. Therefore, our clothes represent this feeling." She said that Horny Toad is well known for its fleece and that they pay attention to detail both in style and from a technical standpoint. The most popular style for gals is the Euroshag Box Canyon style. They also have a selection of shirts and slacks in wrinkle free fabric.

Lowe Alpine. Lowe Alpine says your outwear is your first line of defense against all the naughty things Mother Nature likes to throw at you. If it doesn't perform, you won't either. According to Andrew Kelly, Lowe Alpine's Triple Point Ceramic outerwear pieces are the next generation of waterproof and breathable products designed to keep you dry, comfortable and protected. Lowe Alpline also offers base layer pieces with Dryflo wicking ability in three different textures…marl, striped, and ribbed textures.

Woolrich. From its tradition of functional, performance-oriented products, Woolrich introduced a new innovation in natural fabric, TechnoWool. This fabric offers thermoregulation and moisture control in a tight fabric construction. TechnoWool creates a barrier effect against the elements, making the fabric less permeable to air and enhancing wool's natural ability to repel water.
