Like What You See in Those Chapungu Stone Sculptures?
Learn To Do It Yourself In Just Five Days
CHICAGO (May 27, 2003) While youre marveling at the detail and inspiration of the sculptures in the exhibition, Chapungu: Custom and Legend, A Culture in Stone, consider making one yourself.
Theres a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this summer and fall to work with the famous stone sculptors and master carvers of Zimbabwe and the Chapungu exhibit at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Garfield Park Conservatory -- artists like Agnes Nyanhongo, considered one of the most important Zimbabwean artists working in the craft, and Sylvester Mubayi, a 30-year veteran and influential member ofthe Zimbabwean sculpture community.
Five-day workshops at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Garfield Park Conservatory run weekly from June through October, with the first workshop beginning June 10. Participants are supplied with tools and stone from Africa, and are trained to create their own masterpiece by the Zimbabwean professionals.
All classes run Tuesday through Saturday, with lunch on your own. Classes at the Garden are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 10-14, July 8-12, Sept. 23-27 and Oct. 7-11; and from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 24-28, July 15-19, Aug. 12-16, Aug. 26-30 and Sept. 9-13. Classes at the Conservatory are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 17-21, July 8-12, July 22-26, Aug. 5-9, Aug. 19-23, Sept. 2-6, Sept. 23-27 and Oct. 14-18.
