The primary responsibility of the DIVISION OF FISH & WILDLIFE PROTECTION is to provide the necessary enforcement programs to ensure the success of state long- and short-term objectives for fish and game management. The division has the responsibility to closely monitor fish and game resource harvest to ensure that it is taken in accordance with the rules, regulations, and statutes governing such activities. Fish and Wildlife Protection troopers patrol the state by road, air and waterway. They issue citations, seize equipment used in violations, and actively assist in search-and-rescue operations.

The state of Alaska has 586,412 square miles or approximately 365,000,000 acres and 47,300 miles of coast line. All this area is covered by approximately 89 Fish & Wildlife Protection State Troopers. This means there is only one trooper for every 6,588 square miles.
