The Balinese is a devout Hindu, but he is a Balinese in that lie perpetuates little nonsense about caste or sacred cows of any breed or brand (Hanna 1972).
But any effort to stress Bali,s agricultural expertise and commonsensical restraints on religiosity at the explained of pervasive status concerns, rituals of trance, or any other sacred cows leaves one in the uncomfortable position of omitting from what is explained the bulk of what is witnessed. Finally a third fallacy - and a more seductive one because it is supported by the island's repetitive, orderly surfaces is conveyed in Margaret Mead's momentary fancy of an inborn Balinese birdie:

The Balinese are unusually photogenic and tend to compose in groups so that half the work of photography is done for the photographer (1970).

Rattier than merely appreciating how the Balinese cluster in a way which complement tier own preferences in composition - as the Nuer must do in the eyes of another photographer, or in the viewfinders of other equipment, or according to other standards of composition - the observer here implies a natural Balinese sense of group portraiture. in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
