Shore Angling at Poulnasherry Bay, Co Clare

Location: Shannon Estuary, Co Clare

Nearest Airport: Shannon

Type of Angling Mark: Estuary mouth

Angling Mark

Anglers can fish either side of the Estuary Mouth. Access is easy and parking is available on both shores. The best periods to fish are during the first hour of the flood tide and around high water. Flounder and bass can be expected while bottom fishing with lugworm and crab. There is a very strong tide here owing to the narrow "bottle neck" at the mouth of the bay. When the tide is 'running' the only practical fishing methods are spinning or free lining for bass and occasional sea trout. Ray and monkfish are caught here at times in the slacker waters inside the estuary.

Bait

At Querrin Pier which is approximately 3 kms on the western side of Poulnasherry Bay can provide lugworm in the sandy/muddy channel beside the pier. The lug beds are confined to a small area on either side of the channel. Some soft peeler crab can be collected under the weed to the right of the small pier. There is no problem with access and parking is adjacent to the pier. Also bait can be collected at Moyasta. This is located on the main road from Kilrush to Kilkee. The first turn on the left, west of the village leads down a narrow road to the head of Poulnasherry Bay. Soft peeler crab can be collected between the head of the beach and the mudflats. Crab appear to be the more plentiful here in June and July compared to late August and September. There is another location to the west side of Kilrush inlet, this is via a left turn immediately after the graveyard, Cars can be parked at the end of this road where it meets the beach. This is an excellent area for lugworm. The sandy strip in the middle of the beach below the Sewage Works produces good quality black lugworm. The best time to dig is at extreme low water, with one hour either side of high tide. Soft and peeler crab can also be collected there and most crabs may be found buried in the sand under the serrated wrack.
