Stranded whale that died from starvation as a result of line wrapped throughout its mouth. SCIENTISTS DISCOVER POSSIBLE NEW WHALE SUBSPECIES
Whale Stranding Illustrates the Importance of Collecting Data from Stranded Marine Mammals

NOAA Fisheries and scientists from various academic institutions believe they have found a new subspecies of Bryde’s whale in North Carolina. On March 13, 2003, a beach comber found a dead baleen whale on the shore of Carolina Beach near Wilmington, N.C. During studies of tissue samples collected, scientists determined that the animal most likely died from starvation as a result of line entanglement. Scientists also determined that the whale is a member of the baleen whale family and has a unique genetic sequence only seen in one other whale.

NOAA RESEARCHERS RETRIEVE WEALTH OF DATA AFTER CHASING HURRICANE ISABEL — As Hurricane Isabel headed for the North Carolina coast, NOAA researchers continued their pursuit of observations from both land and air. One valuable weather product that benefits from data collected during landfalling hurricanes is a surface wind analysis map known as H*Wind. NOAA Magazine - The stories behind the headlines.

NOAA AIRCRAFT TAKES DRAMATIC PHOTOS OF NORTH CAROLINA COAST AFTER HURRICANE ISABEL UNLEASHED HER FURY — Hurricane Isabel left her permanent calling card after slamming into the coast of North Carolina last week. North Carolina now has a new inlet courtesy of the Category 2 storm located near Cape Hatteras Village. A NOAA Twin Otter aircraft flew multiple flights Friday through Sunday where it took detailed images of the altered coastline. AccessNOAA - NOAA Employees Make a Difference
