We are keen to update and improve the education pages of the Met
Office web site and require your help. We would be grateful if you
could spend a few minutes completing this on-line
questionnaire.
February 2003
The Met Office is supporting the Royal Meteorological Society with
its annual MetLinkInternational
project. This online project will run during Science Week, 10-14
March 2003, when schools from around the world will take and exchange
weather observations.
A new secondary level leaflet, covering lightning
location, has been added to the Curriculum
Learning Centre.
November 2002
Five new leaflets have been added to the Curriculum
Learning Centre. These are secondary leaflets covering observing
rainfall, the
climate of the British Isles, shipping
forecasts, water
in the atmosphere and monsoons.
October 2002
Working with the Environment Agency, the Met Office has produced
a teaching aid for KS3 in the form of an ICT
lesson plan on flooding. This allows students to study issues
such as, "What is a flood plain?", "Do I live in
a place prone to flooding?", and to investigate why the floods
of Autumn 2000 were so devastating.
April 2002
The results of the balloon challenge are in! Over 120 schools from
England and Wales took part in the Met Office balloon challenge
with the furthest balloons reaching the Czech Republic and Germany.

March 2002
As part of Science Year, the Met Office invited schools to join
in the Met Office Balloon Challenge. Pupils were asked to predict
the final destination of helium balloons released from their school
grounds. For Welsh schools this was on 8 March 2002, and for the
rest of the UK it was on 20 March 2002. Over 120 schools from England
and Wales took part.
The Met Office held its first Innovation Awards ceremony on 8 March.
The overall people's choice winner was the education team who developed
a braille weather chart.
February 2002
A series of quizzes have been designed
to test your knowledge of weather and climate. Each mini-quiz has
15 questions and is based around a leaflet in the Curriculum Learning
Centre. There is also a master quiz with 25 questions picked at
random from all the leaflets.
As part of Science Year, the Met Office are inviting schools to
join them in the Met Office Balloon Challenge. For Welsh schools
this will be on 8 March 2002, and for the rest of the UK on 20 March
2002.
August 2001
The 'Did You Know?'
page of the Curriculum Learning Centre has been fully updated with
a new set of facts and figures.
Nine new leaflets
have been added to Curriculum Learning Centre. These include secondary
leaflets covering clouds, thunderstorms, airmasses, hurricanes and
microclimates. A new section of primary level leaflets covers rainbows,
the sun, seasons and weather.
A new case study "The
storms of October 2000" has been added to the Historical
weather events page.
Teacher's notes for the weather
story and weather machine packs, have now been updated to meet
the requirements of the new curriculum.
July 2001
A joint collaboration with Junior Education magazine has seen the
production of an eight page teacher's resource, for publication
in the July 2001 issue.
June 2001
The UK hourly data pages
have been further expanded, with the addition of 10 new stations.
A new leaflet providing a series of suggested GCSE
Projects has been added to the secondary activities section
of Curriculum Learning Centre.
May 2001
The Met Office Education web site was awarded the Silver
Award for 2000 by the Geographical Association.
April 2001
The addition of our historical
data catalogue, which has been added to Weather Data section,
allows teachers and students to request up to six sheets of historical
data.
A list of weather topic related web
links has been developed to help the understanding of various
aspects of the weather. Topics include general information, hurricanes,
thunderstorms, global warming and climate change.
4 new leaflets have been added to Curriculum
Learning Centre. These cover the topics or Water in the Atmosphere,
Weather Observations, Satellites and Weather Forecasting.
