School of Public Health Overview Project location: S. Columbia Street on south side of Rosenau Hall. Projected cost/funding source(s): $38.98 million/total -- $13.38 million/state bond; $15.6 million/overhead receipts; $10 million/private. Scope/benefits of project: This project will construct an addition to the School of Public Health. The three-story building will provide research laboratories, offices and classrooms, teaching auditorium and atrium with food service and outdoor plaza. Square footage: 123,000 Projected construction timeline: July 2002 - July 2004. Impact on campus aesthetics Trees/green space/landscaping: Building will be located in existing surface parking lot, resulting in minimal loss of trees or green space. Any landscaping removed because of construction will be replaced to enhance stormwater mitigation. Architecture: The addition will complement the existing context of the School of Public Health. Impact on parking and transit, traffic, and pedestrian safety Parking and transit: No changes anticipated. Traffic: Any lane changing on South Columbia Street will be clearly marked and only for very temporary timeframes. Pedestrian safety: Alternate pedestrian pathways will be clearly marked along a small section of South Columbia Street. Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center Overview Project location: South Road east of Coker Hall. Projected cost/funding source(s): $6 million/ chancellor's discretionary; $3 million/private. Scope/benefits of project: This new building will include a 400-seat auditorium, art gallery space, multipurpose room, dance studio, classrooms, seminar rooms, library and student offices, as well as offices for the center, Upward Bound and Institute for African American Research. Square footage: 44,500. Projected construction timeline: July 2002 - January 2004. Impact on campus aesthetics Trees/green space/landscaping: Great efforts were made to save as many trees as possible. Trees between the Bell Tower parking lot and the Coker Woods stream will be removed (trees at the bank of the stream will be saved). Wooded area between Coker Woods (south of the existing stream) and the Bell Tower parking lot will be removed for the new building. New trees, shrubbery and turf will be added. Architecture: The new building will have a brick/stucco exterior and metal roof. The building will blend with the surrounding area and be situated to work with the future University development plan. Impact on parking and transit, traffic, and pedestrian safety Parking and transit: About 70 net parking spaces will be lost. Traffic: East entrance drive to the Bell Tower parking lot will be closed during construction. Pedestrian safety: Existing sidewalk at the east entrance drive will be relocated to the opposite side of the driveway.
