Wrightwood
The area is bounded by Diversey, Fullerton, Halsted, and Lakewood and is one of the many neighborhoods within Lincoln Park.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Lincoln Park neighborhood is primarily Caucasian, and has a population 5.3% black, 3.6% Asian and 5.0% Hispanic. The figures for Wrightwood are presumed to be similar.
Young professionals, many buying their first home, created a demand for upscale housing, dining, and entertainment. Much new housing construction resulted. In 2000, about half of the housing units were built prior to 1939. There have been a considerable number of new restaurants, taverns, theatres and other entertainment venues in the area. Major institutions in the surrounding area such as the Children’s Memorial Hospital and DePaul University have expanded. Homeowners have been rehabbing centennial houses preserving the character and quality of the original structures. Tax incentives have helped encourage this renovation. This has resulted in an increase in cost of residential housing in Wrightwood as well as in surrounding neighborhoods. There are a limited number of rental units.
Wrightwood is a beautiful neighborhood. The renovated buildings are modern and open on the inside and yet the old façades have been left on the exterior. The streets, lined with trees and ivy, still look aged. Wrightwood has something for everyone’s budget and taste. There are plenty of retail businesses and services on Diversey, Fullerton, Halsted and Lincoln, the four major streets in the neighborhood. Halsted also serves as a dining and entertainment district. Racine and Sheffield are primarily residential streets.
Each year the Wrightwood sponsors the annual fundraiser, the Taste of Lincoln Avenue. This event is one of the largest neighborhood festivals of Chicago and features live music, arts and crafts booths, a petting zoo, and food.
