Islands of Trang Province

With over 46 islands under responsibility, Trang increasingly attracts tourists who come to appreciate their scenically stunning beauty. Most of islands in Trang Sea are less visited, making them the isolate place for those who love to relax in the peaceful atmosphere amidst the spectacular nature. Each island possesses its characteristic beauty and offers the different kinds of landscape: caves, lagoons, waterfalls, coral reefs and absolutely beaches. The islands in the north are under the control of Hat Chao Mai National Park, and the ones in the south are the responsibility of Petra Island National Park.

Koh Muk and Morakot Cave: For visitors who come to Trang, Koh Muk is one of the interesting attractions. The second-largest island in Hat Chao Mai National Park is full of the towering cliffs facing the sea to the west; to the east locates the fishery village which faces the main land. The high limestone cliffs are home of swallows and conceal the magnificent Morakot Cave or Emerald Cave inside, locally known as "Tam Nam". The cave can only be entered by boat at low-tide by passing under a limestone hole that disappears under the water when the tide is high. The boat slowly drifts through an 80-meter-tunnel enveloped by total darkness and complete silence except the squeals of flying bats. Then the boat gradually emerges from darkness into an unbelievably picturesque scene: a brilliant interior lagoon is fringed by the powdery white sand and enclosed by the majestically towering cliff which is roofed by the clear blue sky above, and the surrounding mountain wall is painted with the lush and green leaves. The entrance point lies in the west of the Island. Tourists should be alert that they should go out of the cave before the tides come in or they will not be able to get out until the next day.

To get to Koh Muk, there are hired boats leaving the piers on Pakmeng, Changlang, and Chao Mai Beaches.

Kradan Island: This is the land of corals and the most beautiful island of Trang. The Island lies within the boundaries of Hat Chao Mai National Park; about 20 percents of the land is covered with privately owned rubber and coconut plantations. Kradan Island is famous for its fine powdery sand and wide beaches as well as the clear water, it is so clear that the corals under the water can be seen. Besides, a thousand of colorful fish makes the underwater world very magnificent for snorkeling or diving. For those who love surfing, there are small basins which have big waves rattling the shore regularly for you to enjoy this activity. To get to Kradan Island, it takes about one- hour and- forty- minute- boat- ride from Pakmeng Beach.

Koh Chueak: This is another paradise for diving. It stands between Koh Muk and Koh Ngai, about four kilometers from Koh Ngai. The island is reputed for its abundance of coral reefs and species of fish.

Libong Island: Libong is the biggest island in Trang, situated within the southern Petra Island group, 45 kilometers from Trang, only 30 minutes by boat. The island is considered as the land of sea birds and famous for the attractive beaches and coral reefs along the southwestern coast. A long stretch of unspoiled beach with clear water is wonderful for swimmers. Thung Yakha and To Kea Bay are the highlighted beaches of Libong; their beauty is enhanced by a small but pleasant waterfall which flows down the overlooking hills. On the mountain slope, locates the office of Forestry division which offers spaces for camping. From several beautiful capes on the Island such as Juhoy Cape, Thuat Cape, and To Chai Cape, you get a superb panoramic scene of Chao Mai Island and Chao Mai Beach.

Way of life of local people still go on with its own rhythm here; there are three villages settled on the island, namely, Ban Nakhao, Ban Koh Libong, and Ban Langkhao. Of the total population, 95 percents are Muslims. They are fishermen and gardeners who plant rubbers and coconuts.

The eastern area of the island is administrated by the Libong Island Wildlife Association as the sanctuary for migratory birds down from their homeland in Siberia. During the months of November and December, thousands of birds get away from the cold and come to stay in Juhoy Cape and on Had Toob Beach. Visitors can come here to see the various kinds of birds; the most popular is the Crab Plover which once used to be a bird of the Royal Family in England. Today, there are some of them which never returned to their home and became part of Juhoy Cape. The Sanctuary is also the home of endangered sea life such as green turtles, dolphins, and the rare manatee. It is estimated that two dozen endangered manatees (Manatus senegalensis) live in the protected waters off Juhoy Cape. This kind of creature considerably inspired an imaginative Thai belief; people believe that manatees are mermaids; they are also called Dugong which means mermaid in Malay dialect. For westerners who are familiar with mermaids of Hans Christian Anderson may require a great deal of imagination for trying to find the connection between these two different mermaids.

To get to the Island, passengers can board a ferry at Kantang Port or at Chao Mai; it takes only thirty minutes to reach there.

Sukorn Island: Sukorn Island is under Palian district's administration, located only 3 kilometers off shore. Sukorn Island is the official name while Mu Island is the local one. Its name means "pig" in Thai; however, the majority of the people here are Muslims. The island is visited for its several lovely beaches which offer the golden sand and coral beds on the eastern coast, and for the delicious watermelons which are abundant in March and April. To reach there, one-hour-boats set out from Ta-Sae Pier every morning. Alternatively, take a bus or a van from Muang district for approximately 35 kilometers and cross a ferry at Palian Port or Takam Pier. Boats leave twice daily at 10:00 and 14:00 hrs. The trip takes 40 minutes.

Petra and Laorieng Islands: The islands are included in the Petra Island Nation Park which is composed of totally 22 large and small islands such as, Khao Yai, Lanti Lidi, Bulon, Prama Island, and etc. The National Park is situated around the area of the Strait of Malacca, 30 kilometers away from Thai-Malaysian border. Petra and Laorieng Island are particularly attractive among others for their scenically magnificent beaches, and for the abundance of fish and coral reefs. Those who love fishing can often find big fish here.
-Kho Ngai: Actually, Koh Ngai, a small island, is under the administration of Krabi Province, but it is classified as a tourist destination in the Trang Sea because it is easier to get there from Trang. The island is visited for its white sandy beach and crystal clear water with its surrounding magnificent corals. A boat trip from Pak Meng beach takes about an hour to reach the island.
