Where to get this, you ask Where else but the market which, as you will
recall, is but a jet of beetle juice away.
You cross the road and plunge into the melee. A myriad potent smells all
clamour for recognition .. the mouthwatering aroma of sate, sizzling over
hot charcoal, as the crouching vendor busily plies his fan; the sweet
scent of jampaka where an old woman prepares temple offerings; a powerful
stench arises from the assorted open cans around the dried fish seller;
the smell of fresh bananas, mangoes and jeruks mingles with the barnyard
Odors from baby
pigs, fighting cocks and sleek ducks, while from a dozen or more stalls
comes the waxy smell of batik.
You step over a basket piled high with tiny red and green chillies, by-pass
a seller of pink and white rice cakes, and come to a stop in front of
a low rail hung with batiks. A brief spate of bargaining, an exchange
of a few rupiahs, and you tuck your material under one arm and head for
Astiti.

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated.
Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the
redemption of their souls.
