Mark Michelson, Bruce McLean, Dave Brown, and Dino Miranda caught one 142# marlin 10 big aku and 2 ono
|
We got a 4:20 start going to my new favorite spot on this day of 20 mph trades. When we got there we took a double in the first school and got 2 big aku.We got 6 in that school and then found one more and got 4 in that one. We did have at least one 5 banger and got three of them, nice cooperative fish and all in the 20-25 pound range. Then we found a current line and Mark got to reel in a 42 pound ono. Then inside the X buoy we hooked a nice marlin and Dave did a great job of reeling it in. It took out 450 yards of line and he had it to the boat in about 45 minutes. And it came up almost dead the way we like them to come to the boat. In the harbor only Mark and Dave consumed the traditonal eyeballs. These guys had a great day. Aloha Capt Rusty

Sam and Kenneth Orem caught 15 big aku, 9 ono, and 9 mahi, the biggest a 42 pounder
|
We got a 4:30 start going to my new favorite spot on this day of 20 mph trades. When we got there we found a aku pile and took a triple on the first pass and got all three 20 pounders. We got 5 in that school, then found another school and got 10 out of that one. When they stopped biting we headed on down and Scot found a small floater under 4 small birds. We caught an ono and a mahi on our first pass, then Scot baited up 8 more mahi. This was great action, as good as it gets. We then trolled for onos and got 8 more of them. Back in the harbor both Sam and Kenneth indulged in the eyeball ritual. These guys did great, a day to remember. Aloha Capt Rusty

John McDaniel, Daniel Hamilton, and James Guillen had a great time catching 10 big 24 pound aku
|
We got a casual start at 5:30 on this day of 25 mph trades going to my new favorite spot, between the X and LL. We took an ono strike on the way but it came off. At the spot we found a big pile that was big aku and we took a double on the first pass and got both of them. We kept getting one or two a pass and then they wised up and we moved to the next pile and got a few more there. They were all 20 pounders or better. In the harbor it was only me eating eyeballs. They all handeled the rough water very well, good going guys. Capt Rusty

Day 3 and down we go past the II area and on down and out, to about 20 miles there we were forced watch as these guys hooked this fish up while we both were headed to an aku pile. We were close but again no cigar for us, we ended up with 2 aku and one ono for the day. There is always next year. Aloha Capt Rusty

Day 2 biggest mahi of day 2 at 31.5 puts us on the prize board
|
Today like yesterday is blowing at 25 mph. We head for the J today and get no hits there so out we go and we find a school of big aku and get 2 nice 23 pounders, too bad they dont count in the tournament. Then we found an open school of mahi and got the one nice big bully on one of my new lures. No other strikes the rest of the day. It was great to be winning some prize money already.

Dino Miranda, Capt Rusty, Paul Lindberg, and Scot on day one of hanapaa 03' with two ono, two aku , and one spearfish.

Day one and we go up the inside headed for the X buoy. Right off Kahuku point we took three ono stikes and only got one, a 14 pounder. No strikes at the X so we went up and out and found a school of big aku and got 2. Then we went down towards the J and hooked a nice marlin on the corner pole. It was screaming nicley when it broke main line and the marlin started jumping wildly, we also saw a second marlin. We suspect that the second marlin hit the lure trailing the first one breaking the line. We just hate it when that happens. We went on down to the II area and caught our small spearfish there. Then it was stop fishing at 4:30. Not a great start for us but some tournament boats did real well.Aloha Capt Rusty

We got a 4:00 AM start going to outside the II area on this day of 20 mph trades. We found some open school looking birds and got a nice mahi in them. We came back in and at 4 miles outside the II we hooked a big ahi and Steve went to work on it. He did a great job reeling it up, being a big fish it took over an hour and a half to get it to the boat. When it came up it was all spent and easy at gaff. Nice big fish. On our way in we got a small mahi right outside the harbor, to end a great day of fishing. Steve had always wanted to catch a big ahi, now he can cross that off his list. Aloha Capt. Rusty

Steve Mapua, Robert Leahey, Steve Manser caught 2 onos 0ne mahi and a 110 pound marlin
|
We got a 4:25 start going to the X buoy on this day of 25 mph trades.We took an ono strike on the first pass at the X and got one 25 pounder. Then we went up and out looking for something and took a mystery strike that came off. We then came back to the X and got a marlin hookup and Steve Manser did a great job reeling it in. At gaff we had a problem getting a second gaff in it and it pulled off and broke line, bummer. Trolling the area we caught a nice mahi. Then on our way in we took a marlin strike and Steve Manser reeled this one in too and this one was more spent at gaff so it was easy. A nice 110 pounder. These guys are tough to handle this big water this well. Aloha Capt Rusty

Scot, Stan Corzine, Robert Leahey, Greg Phillips caught 2 marlin and one mahi
|
We got going at 4:30 headed for the X buoy on this day of 10 mph trades. Our first pass on the X we got a nice mahi for Greg, then on up and out above the buoy. Then the center lure took off with a nice sized marlin and Robert was the man in the chair for a short but sweet fight of about 25 minutes. It came up almost dead the way we like to see our marlins come up, less chance of problems. Then on to the LL buoy and we caught 2 small shibi and 2 small aku on the light line. Then we trolled on back down towards the X and got a stripped marlin double in a small pile of birds and Stan got one of them to the boat and one came off. No other strikes on the way home. In the harbor Stan and Greg both consumed the traditional fish eyeballs gladly, even the big ones from the marlin. These guys are Scot and my friends from the mainland, and they did great. Scott Deans, Thomas Lister, Frank Deans, Jeremy Lemmon, and Steve Wilson had an active day catching 13 mahi and 16 onos for 500 pounds of fish
|
We got a 4:00 AM start on this day of 10 mph winds going to the J buoy. We did not find the J so we went to the X buoy, no life apparent there either. So we trolled on up and out from the X and at 7:00 we found a big ball of rope floating. We took a triple ono on our first pass and got two of them. We trolled up about 8 more onos and then we baited for mahi and got two each pass. On one pass Frank got a 42 lbs. bull mahi on 50 lbs. test no leader, he did a great job on that one. We baited until they stopped coming and then set up and trolled for onos again, we ended up with 16 ono and 13 mahi. This was one hell of a good floater. No strikes on the way home. In the harbor I could only get Thomas and Scott to join in the eyeball eating ritual. These guys did great today. Aloha Capt. Rusty
