| The state's popularity among tourists lies in
its wide range of natural, manmade, historical and cultural
attraction. Places of interest in the state include:
Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque: The
state mosque is a magnificent architectural winder. Its
mammoth blue dome, one of the largest in the world, is the
first imposing feature that will catch the visitor's eyes.
The mosque also has the tallest minarets in the world at
142.3 meters. It features a design that incorporates
traditional Islamic and contemporary Malay styles.
Bukit Cahaya Seri Alam Agricultural Park: Situated
on the northern fringe of Shah Alam, this 1,258 hectare park
is Malaysia's first agricultural park. It offers a glimpse
of Malaysia's agricultural resources such as oil palm, rice,
rubber, cocoa, coffee, coconut and fruit within cool
surrounding. Other attractions in the park include spice,
ornamental, mushroom, orchid, bamboo and cactus gardens,
dams, a suspension bridge, a bird and deer park. Bicycles
are available for hire at the park between various spots
within the sprawling grounds on weekends. There are also
facilities for camping out, or chalets for overnight
visitors.
Batu Caves: Located 13 kilometers north of Kuala
Lumpur, Batu Caves is a popular tourist attraction,
particularly during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam which
falls in late January each year. The 272 steps leading up to
the main cave provide a challenging climb for old and young
alike.
Kuala Selangor Nature Park: The Kuala Selangor
Nature Park covers more than 200 hectares of secondary
shrubs, wetlands, inter-tidal mudflats and mangrove swamps.
It is a world-renowned bird sanctuary, with about 160
species record here. It features hides, paths, watchtowers,
and boardwalks to enable visitors to view the variety of
flora and fauna. Accommodation is available to those keen to
experience the natural surrounding.
Kuala Selangor Fireflies: The quiet village of
Kampung Kuantan is the site of the largest firefly colonies
in the world. The nocturnal tours are extremely popular,
with boats hired at the Kampung Kuantan jetty. The skilled
local oarsmen make this experience a memorable and
unforgettable one.
Pulau Ketam: Literally translated as "Crab
Island", Pulau Ketam is located 10 kilometers west of
Port Klang. The rustic fishing village attracts visitors
because of its unique stilt-village where wooden board
streets are just five feet across and traffic consists
largely of pedestrians and bicycles. The attractions here
include boat tours to aquatic farms raising fish, jelly
fish, crab, and shrimp. The island is also popular for its
seafood restaurants.
Pulau Carey: Located just off the Selangor coast
south of Port Klang, Pulau Carey or Carey Island is home to
the Mah Meri aboriginal community. Although they have been
assimilated into modern life and work in the nearby
plantations and farms, the Mah Meri people have retained
their culture and way of life. Apart from exhibitions of
their traditional dances and music, the Mah Meri are
particularly known for their votive cultures, fashioned from
a kind of swamp hardwood known as "Nyireh Batu".
Theme Parks: Selangor is a theme park wonderland.
Its theme parks offer hours of fun-filled excitement and
thrills for the family. The Sprawling Sunway Lagoon located
close to the modern Subang Jaya township is the country's
first water theme park. Its facilities include a
comprehensive range of water sport, theme rides, amusement
and recreational facilities. Mines Wonderland is another
family-oriented theme park located in Sungai Besi, south of
Kuala Lumpur on the fringes of a huge lake, once the site of
the world's largest open cast mining. Its main attraction is
the dazzling musical fountains and multi-colored laser show
held at night. Other attractions include a Snow House, rides
and amusement facilities, and an indoor theme park with a
range of snow-based attractions.
The Royal Gallery: The Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah
Royal Gallery in Klang, touted as a landmark heritage site,
was first opened to public on 18 November 2000. Inspired by
His Majesty Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah himself, the gallery
marked the eventual fulfillment of His Majesty's dream. The
inception of this gallery began as a persona; endeavor by
the royal couple to share His Majesty's collection of
priceless royal heirlooms, artifacts, and gifts from his
subjects and foreign dignitaries.
Bagan Lalang Beach: Bagan Lalang Beach is poised
to be a major tourist spot in Sepang of Selangor given the
fact that it is closed to the country's new airport, KLIA.
Experience the quiet and tranquil surrounding with friends
and family members. This beach is well known fro its "ikan
bakar" or barbequed fish. Restaurants that serve
various fish and other seafood dishes are opened till late
night to cater for the ever-increasing number of tourists.
