Is actually frequent in bali (1959-1002) indeed, it is vital to remember that hamlets are never conceptualized as territorial units. Korn as well (1932) recorded that kichens (kuren) are not legal communities (rechts - gemeenschap) and that banjars are often not territorial units, but he sought to historicize this dimension. The hamlet is in some way the implementing organ of the desa adat (Geertz and Geertz 1975). And often the desa adat restricts the customary usages of those hamlet councils that support it. But in other areas the hamlet go their own way, and on rare occasions they might even switch their desa affiliation. The essential point is that hamlet are not merely divisions of different religious and civic also religious funcuons. The degree of control of desa councils by banjar councils is highly variable as is the composition of desa councils. Mode 3. irrigation group, A Balinese rice-cultivator

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
