Trivia

Falcons On City Streets

In the United States, the pesticide DDT was the main cause of the decline in avian predators. The pesticide received much publicity concerning America's national symbol, the bald eagle. DDT also caused the egg shells of Peregrine falcons to become thin and break easily.

In the late 1970's, falconers from Cornell University began breeding and releasing falcons into the wild. Because of great horned owls preying on falcons released in natural rocky cliff areas, tall buildings in urban settings have been selected as an alternative release site. The buildings create an updraft similar to the ones experienced on the bluffs overlooking a river. Urban peregrines also have lots of pigeons to prey upon.

Neotropical What?

Many of the migratory bird species that Americans enjoy spend a significant part of the year south of our borders. Neotropical migrants are birds that breed in the United States or Canada, and winter south, in the Carribean, or Central or South America. These include ducks, humminbirds, orioles, sandpipers, vireos, and warblers. Seems like it's not a bad choice for humans as well.
