where segmentation can take place, H and C. Geertz 1975. In Part 11 we will detect kawitan ideology as it diffuses across the Balinese religious and political landscape. Our examples come from the peripheral kingdoms, of precolonial Bali, and even from fringe areas that were just being settled and organized according to Bah-Hindu principles as the Dutch took control. Here groups had riot been assigned pacatu-ritual duties by court centers before colonialism; but in their subsequent development, which continues today, they have persisted in referring to pacatu concepts and courtly models. Under the conditions reported front Tihingan, dadia options of in-marriage and ritual self-sufficiency among a group of supposed progeny serve to fold a community in on itself and to intensify local status competition. Thus where population is dense and all the riceland is under cultivation and water resources are exhausted, this ideology can sustain intense status competition at the expense of rivals. But where resources are still to be tapped, these same principles - in their social form the dadia, in their religious form, kawitan - reveal their dynamic potential. A sacred ancestral source is projected and ceremomalized by descendants who, as they propagate, tend both to marry back into the more direct lines of descent from the reputed ancestor and to tie other areas (along with their products, groups, and arts) to this same sacred source so to elevate its importance. There is an intensification of attachment to the ancestor temple, which then serves as a sort of religious anchor for the expanding associates and the resources they control that are converted into offerings at tile appropriate festival dates,

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine. Everything Bali Indonesia |
