"Nyonya not mind. Nyonya go to feast - but not eat turtle. Turtle from sea - not good." To give weight to his point, Sana paused heret rubbed his stomach, and contorted his cheerful face into a pained grimace. "Nyonya only eat rice and chicken at party"

Following this advice I survived the evening with nothing more than a nodding acquaintance with Uncle Bob.

Mark you, no need to see a family resemblance before you black ban a food.

Take sambal for instance - and, quite frarlly, you can't take it far enough for my money!

Sambal, as any right-thinking citizen will tell you, is a hot, black, aggressive chili sauce, with fragments of nasty little peppers swimming in it. It tortures the tonsils, floods the eyes and disguises the flavor of any food unlucky enough to tangle with it. If a sambal really puts its mind to it, it can blister the eyeballs at a distance of ten feet.

There's some talk even of making it illegal to serve sambal to any customer not wearing a fire extinguisher

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
