City Guide for Rome

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory although it is customary to leave an additional 5%-10% tip for the waiter, depending on the service.

Safety

Rome, like any western European capital, is a "safe" place. The only problem one can find in Rome, as in any big town with many tourists, is the presence of pickpockets. The base of the pickpockets seems to be the main train station Termini. Further they are also very active in all public transport vehicles and by the sights, where tourists are distracted.

Weather

Rome is blessed with a warm Mediterranean climate and is therefore generally pleasant to visit in spring and autumn. In August it is hot and steamy and most of the locals head for the coast. November can bring rain to Rome and winters are generally mild, though cold spells can occur.

Banks

Banks can be found on almost every corner in Rome. Normal business hours are 8.45am to 1.30pm and 2.45pm to 4.00 Monday to Friday; some of them have longer hours on Thursdays and are also open Saturday mornings. Most of the banks in the city have 24-hours ATM?. The exchange rate at the ATM? is very good, so the only extra fee you'll pay is whatever your bank at home charges for international withdrawals.

Currency

The currency used in Italy is the Euro. Notes come in denominations of E. 100, E. 50, E. 20, E. 10 and E. 5 and the coins in use are E. 2, E. 1, 0.50C, 0.20C, 0.10C, 0.05C, 0.02C and 0.01C.
