National Thanksgiving Turkey contestants hatched on July 10th in a turkey barn in the Carthage, Missouri area.
President Bush will soon pardon the annual Thanksgiving Turkey in the 56th National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation at the White House.

Though live Thanksgiving turkeys have been presented to presidents since the Lincoln administration, the current event dates to 1947, when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was presented to President Harry Truman.

By mid-fall, the NTF selects 15 turkey finalists and narrows this down to a finalist and an alternate the week before the presentation. This year's National Turkey was picked from among a group of 40 birds hatched on July 10 in a turkey barn in the Carthage, Missouri area.

Presidential Remarks

Flat Stanley's White House Visit
President George W. Bush welcomed Flat Stanley to the Oval Office and asked him to say "hi" for him to all the school children when he returns to Chicago. The President told Stanley he wants young Americans to learn to read and pursue an education so they can fulfill their dreams. Because he substituted for National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice at the Senior Staff meeting, Flat Stanley decided to visit her office to give her an update. Instead she reminded Stanley to tell all children to study and listen to their parents.
For years children have colored, cut out and mailed Flat Stanley to places around the world, including the White House. Take a look at Flat Stanley's White House Visit.
