President Bush will soon pardon the annual Thanksgiving Turkey in the 56th National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation at the White House.
Though live Thanksgiving turkeys have been presented to presidents since the Lincoln
administration, the current event dates to 1947, when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was
presented to President Harry Truman.
By mid-fall, the NTF selects 15 turkey finalists and narrows this down to a finalist and an alternate the week before the presentation. This year's National Turkey was picked from among a group of 40 birds hatched on July 10 in a turkey barn in the Carthage, Missouri area.
