Story of Bali, Indonesia

But, now that the gods had decreed no rice would grow, who was he to toss such a god-given holiday back in their teeth? It was not that he was lazy. Let's just say he was not a man who kept opportunity knocking at the door. Rather, he favoured the policy of meeting her at the front gate, grabbing her by the hair, and rushing her in to meet the folkst

So Nang Peluk, overjoyed at the work-free days ahead, sat idly in his compound, nursing his fighting cock, occasionally massaging its muscles or feeding it choice morsels.
In vain did his wife, Mem Peluk, urge him to follow the other farmers and plant different crops.
"Soya beans," scoffed Nang Peluk, "Who wants them They give me indigestion; peanuts are the food of monkeys, and vegetables - already we grow too many.
Now Mem Peluk was somewhat less than overjoyed with this answer, and made no serious effort to disguise it. A day came when not only Nang Peluk, but also his fighting cock, had had enough of her lectures.
Besides, he had thought of a solution

Turning to his wife with a smile he said "All right. I will do as you say. I will plant things like the other farmers. Tomorrow, please bring me the seeds of soya beans and peanuts, but first, you must cook them. That way they will grow better. Also, you must pack rice food for me because I will not come home in the middle of the day but work in the field until dark to make up for lost time. "

From then on, every day, he left home with a parcel of rice and cooked seeds carefully wrapped in a banana leaf, looking every inch the industrious farmer. But immediately Nang Peluk reached the fields, he would gather all the duck boys around him, divide his 99 packed lunch" among them, and together they would sit, joking and eating, until nightfall.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
