In June of 1848, after their treaties were violated and resistance continued, another Dutch expedition was launched. Opposed by a young prince named Gusti Ketut Jelantik, now a hero of Indonesian military history, this incursion ended in disaster for the Dutch. Lured into pursuing the Balinese, force to the inland fortress of Jagaraga. the Dutch troops were encircled and soundly defeated. This debacle gave the Dutch a severe shock and the Balinese suddenly became the nightmare of the mid-19M century Dutch colonial state, There was no alternative but to show the Balinese, the English, and all their enemies that the rout was just a mistake, and that the Dutch were still the dominant power in the Indies.
In April 1849, with 5,000 infantrymen, 3,000 mercenaries, three batteries and six mortars, and a fleet of 60 vessels with 300 marines, the Dutch set out to settle once and for all this Balinese business. Shipping out of Java, this was one of the largest Dutch military expeditions ever organized in the archipelago. After just two days of fighting and the loss of Jelantik and the Dutch commanding general, Buleleng and the fortress Jagaraga were defeated. The army of 20,000 men under the raja of Buleleng sued for peace. Then, in May of that year, Karangasem and Klungkung were subjugated the first time Dutch forces ordered the south Balinese political arena. Gradually, over the next five years, political authority passed from the native rules of north Bali into the hands of Dutch controllers. Buleleng and Jembrana were placed under the direct administration of the Netherlands East Indies government in 1882.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
